Russian small weapons designer Mikhail Kalashnikov created the assault rifle known as the AK-103 in 1994. Similar to the AKM, it is an AK-100 variant of the AK-74M that has 7.62x39mm M43 ammunition chambered.
The AK-103 can be customized with a number of sights, such as telescopic and night vision ones, as well as a knife-bayonet or a grenade launcher similar to the GP-34. With the ability to fit Picatinny rails, more accessories can be mounted on newer models.
When possible, plastic is used in place of wood or metal for parts like the pistol grip, handguards, folding stock, and, depending on the model, the magazine.
Furthermore, as regards the design details of this assault rifle, it will interest you to note that the weapon has protective coatings for it's metal parts to withstand corrosion. High quality shatterproof plastic is used to construct the forearm, magazine, buttstock, and pistol grip.
Also, smaller counterpart of the AK-103 is the AK-104. It sports a shortened barrel and a muzzle brake that was adapted from the previous AKS-74U and it is capable of firing 7.6239mm rounds.
